Honorary Chairman

Holcim appointed Thomas Schmidheiny as its Honorary Chairman in 2018 in recognition of his many years of service to the Group.
 

Background


A Swiss national born in 1945, Thomas Schmidheiny was a member of the Board of Directors of Holcim until 2018. He studied mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. He went on to obtain an MBA from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Thomas began his career in 1970 as Technical Director of Holcim Apasco cement. In 1976, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of Holcim Ltd (formerly Holderbank Financière Glaris Ltd), where he held the office of Chairman from 1978 until 2001. He served as Chairman of Holcim’s Board of Directors from 1984 to 2003 and member of the Nomination and Compensation Committee until 2015.

Following Thomas’ retirement in 2018, the Board of Directors named him Honorary Chairman in recognition of his many years of service to Holcim. The Honorary Chairman is invited to attend Board of Director meetings as a guest.
